Posted By HR Partnership on June 13, 2009

Recently 1,313 area residents were surveyed on the Northern Virginia region’s #1 Long-Term Challenge:
And the Survey Says…
Answer #1: Transportation – 54%
Answer #2: Economy/Jobs – 29%
Answer #3: Education/Schools – 23%
The survey, conducted for the Greater Washington Coalition 2050, finds that most area residents identify transportation as the first or second most important long term challenge facing the metropolitan Washington region. This frequency is greater than that of the second and third answers combined.
Growth/development issues were identified by 6% of area residents and protecting the environment/Chesapeake Bay by 4%.
The survey also finds that transportation was the #1 or #2 concern of:
- 68% of Northern Virginia residents (84% in Loudoun County!)
- 48% of suburban Maryland residents
- 26% of District of Columbia residents
The Greater Washington Coalition 2050 is led by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments and described as a “coalition of civic, business and environmental stakeholders.”

NOTE: The survey was conducted by OpinionWorks of Annapolis, MD. The firm describes itself as the polling organization for the Baltimore Sun. Its clients include: Maryland State Arts Council, Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Washington’s Metro System, the Wilderness Federation and National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Who Knew? The NoVA survey results certainly echo the recent Batten Survey conducted here in Hampton Roads.
Thanks to the Northern Virginia Transportation Alliance www.NVTA.org for bringing this to our attention.
