Tired of bad news…

…the good news is, we live in Hampton Roads. And, we have a lot going for us.

Cox Communications has teamed with more than two dozen local business, academic and political leaders to produce a series of eight feel-good commercials promoting the region. The goals of this initiative,” Gary McCollum, Cox Senior Vice President and General Manager said, “are really to lift the spirits of the Hampton Roads citizens, to remind them of the value and beauty of our region and to re-energize the community to support our businesses…. I expect no less than a renewed confidence in the region’s economy.”

Virginia has been named a great place to do business for several years running, and we can be proud that our region has contributed to this well-deserved recognition. Hampton Roads is a great place to live, work and do business!

Our strong military, vibrant tourism industry, healthy commercial infrastructure and excellent institutions of higher learning are just some of the many attributes that make our region great. Now more than ever, it’s time to remind ourselves of the tremendous strengths, advantages and, most importantly, opportunities we enjoy.

That’s why we at Cox Communications have partnered with leaders from across the region to begin a Confidence Campaign. CEOs of Northrop Grumman, the Virginia Peninsula Chamber of Commerce and the Williamsburg Chamber of Commerce, as well as elected officials, are among those who have stepped forward to join the campaign.

Together, through a series of public service announcements, we’re sending positive messages of encouragement and optimism — reminders of the tremendous advantages we enjoy and the value they deliver for our region and beyond.

The state of the economy is important to me, as it is to other business leaders and to us all. I frequently participate in discussions about our area’s many advantages and the need for us to communicate those advantages beyond our borders. But we can also better tell our story within our borders. We can create an internal dialogue that will help drive the outlook needed to spur growth and ongoing economic vitality. The Confidence Campaign is one small way we hope to contribute to that dialogue.

We have many reasons to be confident. Our Peninsula communities are breaking ground — literally — on new and exciting ventures every day. For example, Newport News Mayor Joe Frank along with Gov. Tim Kaine recently turned the first shovels to begin construction for the Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding and AREVA Newport News joint venture. This joint venture will bring a new manufacturing facility, hundreds of jobs and new investment to our region. Further validating Hampton Roads as a great place to live and do business, the city of Hampton and its Redevelopment and Housing Organization received national recognition for its efforts in providing energy-efficient housing for low-income residents. Add to that York County’s numerous recognitions from the National Association of Counties, and you have many reasons to be confident in our collective future.

In the higher education arena, Christopher Newport University, Hampton University, the College of William and Mary, Thomas Nelson Community College and the many other advanced-learning institutions on the Peninsula continue to produce high quality leaders for our future. Great things are happening here!

The Confidence Campaign is just the beginning of what we believe is an important conversation. I hope you will join. We really do have a great community — a community where we can invest, build a life, own a home, grow a business, raise a family and create a future. So let’s be confident. The economy will rebound. Our nation will recover. And in Hampton Roads, our best days are yet ahead.

McCollum is Cox Communications’ senior vice president and general manager. He is spearheading a Hampton Roads “confidence campaign” intended to bolster faith in our future and in Hampton Roads’ economic strength, vitality and resourcefulness.
