Community Matters: Helping Today’s Students Succeed in Tomorrow’s Workforce

How Can We Best Prepare Our Future Workforce for a Global Economy?

The Norfolk Foundation and the Economics Club of Hampton Roads host a Community Matters Luncheon on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at Norfolk’s Waterside Marriott to explore innovative ways schools, businesses and families can help students excel in a world of rapidly changing demographics and technology.

Dr Hrabowski

Dr. Freeman Hrabowski, III is president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County and is a Hampton University graduate.  In 2008, U.S. News & World Report named him one of America’s Best Leaders. He is the co-author of two books on raising academically successful African American children. He chairs the National Academies’ Committee on Underrepresented Groups and the Science & Engineering Workforce Pipeline. He is on the board of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and The Urban Institute.  Dr. Hrabowski speaks nationally on improving education. Started in 2003, Community Matters brings together business, civic and community leaders to explore issues that impact Hampton Roads. Community Matters is sponsored by The Norfolk Foundation and the Economics Club of Hampton Roads. The Norfolk Foundation is the region’s largest grant and scholarship provider. Later in 2009, it will merge with the Virginia Beach Foundation to form the Hampton Roads Community Foundation. The Hampton Roads Economic Club was founded in 1991 by Old Dominion University and sponsors an annual series that brings experts to Hampton Roads to discuss timely economic topics.
