No FOG in Hampton Roads

DIRECT VIDEO Link

Hampton Roads communities have teamed up to provide citizens with the education and tools necessary to keep our sewers fat free and healthy.

The goal is to eliminate FOG—no, not the misty stuff that fills the air. FOG stands for Fats, Oils, and Grease. It’s the stuff that clogs sanitary sewer systems across Hampton Roads—and it’s a harmful threat to the environment.

Why? When poured down the drain, FOG accumulates on pipe walls, restricting the flow of wastewater. Over time, FOG leads to blockages that result in overflows into our homes, streets, and waterways.

Pouring oil down a drain is the same as pouring it directly into a lake or stream. Here are some easy Ways to Dispose of FOG:

  • For best results, use a container with a tight lid. Freeze it and then throw the hardened oil away on trash day.
  • Mix it with unscented kitty litter, sawdust, or sand to solidify the oil. Dispose of it in the trash. Avoid scented or disinfectant types of kitty litter as they can react with the oil and cause a fire.
  • Recycle it at your community’s transfer or recycling center. A list of centers is available at www.FatFreeDrains.com.
